The new director of Agence Maaden Mauritanie insists on compliance with safety standards during his visit to gold prospecting sites
The brand new Director of the Maaden Mauritanie agency, Mr BA Ousmane, visited gold panning sites in the Nouadhibou region. The visit, organised under the slogan “Safety First”, comes barely a week after a similar tour of the Tiris Zemour region, where there are also major gold-panning sites.
The gold mining sector in Mauritania has expanded significantly in recent years, with the inauguration of the Tevregh Zeina mine near Kinross Tasiast. This expansion has raised concerns about environmental practices and worker safety in the area. Against this backdrop, the Maaden Mauritanie agency, which is responsible for managing the sector, is launching new campaigns to strengthen the monitoring and environmental management of gold panning sites.
During his visit, the director of Maaden Mauritanie underlined the company’s commitment to the safety of workers and the environment, pointing out that safety first is an absolute priority for the agency. In this context, he stressed the importance of preserving the safety of prospectors, pointing out that it was not important to exploit a resource without preserving human safety.
The Maaden Mauritania Agency was set up in March 2021 to supervise and oversee the gold panning sector, focusing on environmental protection, worker safety and the fight against illegal practices.
