Morocco: Five new West African countries join the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project
The Moroccan capital, Rabat, hosted, yesterday, the signing of 5 memorandums of understanding between Morocco and Nigeria on the one hand, and Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Ghana on the other. These five MoUs concerns the construction of a gas pipeline which will connect the Kingdom to Nigeria.
The pipeline will provide gas to all West African countries, and will constitute a new transit hub for export to Europe, as it will be linked to the European Maghreb gas pipeline and the European gas network.
A press release from the Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines “ONHYM” stressed that the signing of these agreements reflects the commitment of the countries concerned to contribute to the completion of this strategic project, and attests to their desire to see it through.
The Kingdom of Morocco has recently signed similar agreements with the Economic Community of West African States, Mauritania and Senegal, allowing the signatory countries to provide support for the construction of the project.
The gas pipeline will run along the West African coast, from Nigeria, passing through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania up to Morocco.
This project was announced in 2016 to connect natural gas wells from Nigeria to Morocco across several countries. In 2018, the project entered a new phase with the signing of bilateral cooperation agreements.
